Egypt is one of the world’s largest producers of Japonica rice, which is grown from the waters of the River Nile. The government has tried to control paddy planted area since 2015 to conserve water, although planting has continually exceeded the government’s imposed limit. The country produces one main crop a year and was traditionally a supplier to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern markets such as Libya, Turkey and Jordan. However, rice exports have been banned since 2016 and the government does not appear to be planning to lift the ban in the near future.
