Live Rice Index
India is the world’s second largest producer and consumer of rice after China and is expected to produce a record 114 million MTS of milled rice in 2018/19. Although it is the world’s leading rice exporter, it primarily supplies its domestic market and only around 12% of production is available for export. The Indian government is one of the world’s largest rice buyers, purchasing 38.2 million MTS of paddy from local farmers in 2017/18. This paddy is milled and then sold at a discounted price through the government’s Public Distribution Scheme. India is a major supplier of premium Basmati rice, as well as various varieties of white and parboiled rice. Rice is cultivated throughout the country, with non-Basmati rice primarily grown for export in the eastern states of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Traditional, Pusa and 1121 Basmati varieties are predominantly cultivated in the northern states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
