Live Rice Index
Myanmar was the world’s largest rice exporter in the 1960s. While military rule and isolation from the international community have hampered both rice production and exports since then, Myanmar has become a resurgent rice exporting nation in recent years. The majority of Myanmar’s rice exports travel across the border into China, although increasing volumes of 25% broken white rice are being sold to West Africa. The reduction of duty-free access to the E.U. has also hampered trade of high quality white and parboiled rice. Exports increased by more than 50% in the 2017/18 financial year due to improved demand and governmental and industry support, with the government aiming to increase annual exports to 5 million MTS (milled equivalent) by 2020.
