Live Rice Index
Myanmar was the world’s largest rice exporter in the middle of the 20th century. While military rule and isolation from the international community has harmed both rice production and exports since, Myanmar has become a resurgent rice exporting nation in recent years. The majority of Myanmar’s rice exports travel over the border into China. However, increasing volumes of 25% broken white rice are being sold to West Africa, while duty-free access to the E.U. through the Everything But Arms initiative has facilitated trade of high quality white and parboiled rice to Europe. The country’s relatively new democratic government aims to increase annual exports to 5 million MTS by 2020. While this may appear ambitious when considering that annual exports in recent years have totalled about 1.5 million MTS, the country has the potential to expand production dramatically as its average field yield of 2.7 MTS/ha is far behind those of its neighbours.
