Live Rice Index
Pakistan is one of the world’s major rice exporters, shipping a combined 3 million MTS (milled) annually to East Africa, Europe, the Middle East and China. There is just one harvest a year and Pakistan’s new crop is generally first to the market for the major northern hemisphere white rice harvests, giving exporters a window of opportunity to sell stocks at a discount to other origins. Pakistan’s rice prices are traditionally at their lowest in autumn, when the new crop arrives, and tend to firm in summer when stocks are depleted. The Punjab region in the Himalayan foothills is home to Pakistan’s Super Kernel Basmati, whilst the majority of the country’s rice crops, including Irri-6 and Irri-9 varieties, are cultivated in the southern Sindh region, which is watered by the Indus River.
