Live Rice Index
The U.S. can be considered as two distinct markets. The South is a major producer of long grain rice, which is typically supplied to the domestic market, as well as the Caribbean and Central America. California is a leading exporter of Japonica rice (Calrose), which is mostly exported to East Asia through government tenders under World Trade Organisation obligations as well as to the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The harvest in the South usually begins in August, while California begins its harvest in October. Total average annual production is estimated at around 7 million MTS (milled equivalent). Milled long grain and Calrose prices in mid-2018 were recorded at highs last seen in November 2014 due to reduced 2017/18 production.
