Live Rice Index
Vietnam regularly produces an exportable surplus of around 6.5 - 7 million MTS (milled equivalent) and is a major rice exporter. The country’s export sector relies heavily on demand from its large northern neighbour, China, which accounts for more than 35% of all Vietnamese rice exports, some of which crosses the border unofficially. Vietnam has three harvests a year (Winter/Spring, Summer/Autumn and the 10th Month crop), although the 10th Month crop is often of a comparatively poorer quality. The Winter/Spring crop accounts for around 45% of annual production, Summer/Autumn for around 35% and 10th Month for around 20%. Vietnam’s rice exports increased significantly in 2017 due to improved demand from Asian destinations, especially the Philippines and Bangladesh, and rose again in 2018. Vietnam is also a leading exporter of fragrant rice, with Vietnamese Fragrant and KDM rice often exported to the Iraqi and West African markets.
