Cambodia is becoming a significant rice exporter thanks to greatly increased production of fragrant varieties such as Phka Malis and Sen Kra Ob, as well as Long Grain White and Parboiled Rice. Under the Everything But Arms (EBA) agreement Cambodia has duty free access to the European market so most of Cambodia’s rice exports are destined for the EU. China is also a key market for Cambodia, and there are hopes that exports to China will double in 2015 to 200,000 MTS milled. However, Cambodian rice exports are limited by their uncompetitive prices, which Sok Puthyvuth, president of the Cambodian Rice Federation (CRF), says is responsible for Cambodia’s failure to be awarded in recent Philippines’ National Food Authority (NFA) tenders. The CRF is currently working to reduce Cambodian processing and transport costs.
