Egypt is one of the world’s largest producers of Japonica rice, grown from the waters of the River Nile. The country produces one main crop a year and is a traditional supplier to Mediterranean markets such as Libya, Turkey and Jordan. Egypt is slowly re-emerging onto the world rice market following a decision in October 2014 to lift an export ban. However, sales had been subdued due to a requirement to deliver 1 MT of milled rice to the government for every 1 MT exported, as well as an export tax. However, a decision in October 2015 to remove the delivery requirement should open Egypt up to resuming exports at a competitive level.
