India is the world’s second largest producer and consumer of rice after China and is expected to produce around 106.5 million MTS of milled rice in 2016/17. Although it is one of the world’s leading suppliers of rice, it is regarded as a domestic market as only around 10% of production is available for export. The Indian government is one of the world’s largest rice buyers and their purchasing is expected to increase as the Food Security Act, which aims to provide discounted grains for up to 800 million people is rolled out across the country. India is a major supplier of premium Basmati rice, as well as various varieties of white rice. Rice is grown throughout the country with Traditional Basmati, Pusa, 1509 and 1121 varieties predominantly cultivated in the Northern states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
