Italy is the largest rice producer in Europe and annually exports around 650,000 MTS of milled rice. Production is centred in the Lombardy and Piedmont regions, covering around 235,000ha. Harvesting of the one Italian crop normally takes place in September. Around 70% of the rice grown in Italy are Indica varieties, although there has been a trend towards increased planting of Japonica varieties in recent years. The market has felt pressure from cheaper imports from countries under the Everything But Arms (EBA) agreement, leading to a push for an imposition of import duties for EBA rice and country-of-origin labelling for rice products sold in Italy.
