South American rice is dominated by Brazil which is the region’s biggest producer, consumer and exporter and is a major export market for other South American origins. However Brazilian production was reduced by around 10% in 2016 due to Niño, severely curtailing exports and increasing import requirements. South American rice is often exported to regional markets such as Venezuela, Peru and Chile, but are also regularly awarded in Iraqi Grain Board tenders and can be competitive in West African and European markets. South American countries have their main harvests in February/March and is generally regarded as producing high-quality grains.
